Internet marketing really didn't take off until people really started to use the internet in large numbers (after about 2000). Internet marketing initially started with newsgroups, FFA link pages, simple search engines and classified ads pointing people to very small web sites. Now there are dozens and dozens of methods to drive people to your web site ranging from buying pay per click traffic from Google Ad words to using computer programs to write articles for your blog and submitting them to hundreds of web sites (without having to write anything yourself).
It gets more and more competitive each year but still a great place to make money.
2 to 10. Some methods are borderline scams and some work incredibly well. As with all marketing methods, test when you can. A $50 test is worth it if you find a method that you can expand to a larger budget later. If something doesn't work, you lost $50. Who cares?
